A place with no student loans,
where extracurriculars
run rampant. A place where, in-
stead of stress, you can focus
on loving the one(s) you love.
Love is a four-letter-place
that it seems, oh--, more and more,
I'll never see on my way
toward becoming an "adult"
(I'm an emotional wreck).
Accepting this truth, I'm still
dying to reach my Mecca.
How much interest would it cost?
Hi Melanie, and welcome to YeahWrite! Great job with this month's poetry slam - you really got the point of the form. I love the line "love is a four-letter place." There's so much packed into it.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing more from you!
Melanie,
ReplyDeleteI love the line "How much interest would it cost?" It sent chills right through me. Is the line from the song you chose Ariana Grande? Love her and love this poem!!!
Thank you so much!! Yes, it's "Imagine." I have been obsessed with it since it came out. :)
DeleteThis poem reminded me of being young and striving for goals that sometimes seemed far away with an unclear path to get there. I really liked the final line, "How much interest would it cost?" A reminder that nothing comes without a price, and we all must choose what's worth paying. Nice work.
ReplyDeleteEducation for education's sake, without the burden of debt that now comes with it. That's a theme I agree with. Well done with this - it works well.
ReplyDeleteImagine! I wish a world like this existed. This piece is really relatable and all the lines really work well with one another. I really loved "Accepting this truth, I'm still/dying to reach my Mecca".
ReplyDeleteI liked the playful part of "the one(s) you love. And that the world we imagine is actually attainable, outside of student loans, of course :)
ReplyDeleteNot only is this poem really, truly, timely, it is also highly relatable to too many people (both young and old) just trying to better themselves academically for success in a world/system where that should be a guarantee if one succeeds in jumping through the hoops of attaining a higher-educational degree instead of leading people around by the nose through the ringer by putting up even more hoops to jump through like someone constantly yanking a toy away from a pet trying to pounce on it, at the cost of being able to enjoy life with those who make it worth living through. Bravo.
